WHY THIS HAPPENED:
Israel became a country in 1948. They gained back their holy Jewish land after World War 2 because the United Nations felt bad because of the Jews and the Holocaust and everything that they went through. Prior to this, the Islamic countries (Jordan, Syria, and Egypt) had control over it. They did not like that Israel took the land from them. Muslims do not like Jews and more than 80% of the population of Israel is Jewish. Palestinians occupied the land before Israel took it back. All of the countries were very upset that Israel was in the middle of them.
Israel also took water from the Jordan river and imported it to the Negev desert. The Jordan river is between Jordan and Israel and is very close to Syria and Egypt. Since Israel was taking the water for the desert, there was less water for the other countries. This angered them.
In 1956, the Suez Crisis took place. This was one of many reasons why Egypt and Israel were not friendly with each other. Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, which is in between Israel and Egypt. By nationalizing it, the leader of Egypt at the time. Nasser, was claiming it as Egypt's. This made British mad, and so they got help from France and Israel (who was eager to fight with their neighboring county) and decided to attack. Israel attacked first, and then Great Britain and France soon after. America did not agree with the three countries for starting a war, and so they told them to retreat off of Egypt soil and they threatened them with economic sanctions if they did not listen. This caused Britain and France to back out, and Israel as well soon after. Because of this however, Israel and Egypt became enemies and did not like each other.
TENSION:
Israel had tensions with its neighboring Arab countries, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt. The arab countries did not like that Israel was in the middle of all of them, and they also did not agree with their religion. Muslims have been known to dislike Jews.
